Sadly 1981 would be the last year for the second generation Firebird with a newly designed Firebird ready for debut in 1982.  Style wise the 1981 Firebird was a carry over from 1980 with the Trans Am receiving new decals featuring two colors replacing the four color decals of the previous two years.  The Trans Am would pace the Daytona 500 this year and a special edition Pace Car replica would be available in limited a limited quantity of 2000 to commemorate the occasion.  The pace car featured fully adjustable Recaro seats, the first seat ever offered in a Firebird with a rake adjustment. The standard two tone was dropped for the base Formula which now featured simple monochrome paint but the W50 Formula Appearance Package remained for buyers who wanted a two tone look.  New cloth patterns for the standard and custom interiors were offered in 1981, featuring Millport cloth for standard interiors and elegant Pimlico cloth for custom interiors.  The easiest way to identify a 1981 Firebird is by the bird emblem in the center of the tail light assembly on the door to the gas cap.

A new efficiency system compliments Firebird's aerodynamics.  Pontiac engineers know how much you love Firebird.  So for 1981 they've kept the thrill while carefully honing Firebird's design for driving efficiency.   Pontiac know-how puts together low-drag front disc brakes with an early fuel evaporation system and GM's Computer Command Control.  Trans Am: A new generation of turbo excitement.  Beneath the available new hood decal you'll find your favorite sports machine, with standard V-8, still commands the road.  Formula Firebird: The sophisticated sportster.   Fortify yours with a choice of available engines: the turbo V-8 or a 5.0 liter V-8 with manual four speed.  Esprit:  The plushest Firebird.  Rich interiors complement the acoustically insulated body.  Firebird: Lots of sporty style for the money.  For 1981, this tradition of excitement and value has been updated by Pontiac know-how for a fuel-conscious age.
