The 1979 Firebird was revamped this year with a new aerodynamic front end and a breath-taking full width tail lamp treatment.  This was the most popular Firebird in history with 211,453 sold, a record that would never be broken by any other Firebird.   The muscle car era debatably ended this year with the last of the big block V-8s being offered in a small car line.  The Oldsmobile 403 was standard in the Trans Am and the last of the Pontiac 400 blocks were installed in 8346 cars.

"Announcing the birth of a whole new breed of wow!  The 1979 Firebirds.  Trans Am, our ultimate, comes on stronger than ever in its eleventh year.  With a brand new forefront cast in durable urethane.  Ported headlamps.  And a brand new exclusive black tail treatment that runs the width of the rear deck.  Trans Am's new visage doesn't just hint at its top-of-the-line position.  It shouts it!
