In 1976 the Firebird received a cleaner bumper design, front and rear, without the black rub strips of the previous two years.  1976 will mark the beginning of the Bandit:  for the first time a black and gold special edition Trans Am was available.  This 50th Anniversary Limited Edition, as it was called in '76 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Pontiac marque, originally featured the Hurst Hatch roof for the first time but this was quickly moved to the option column due to leakage problems.  The Trans Am was available again in 400 cid or 455 cid trim, although this would be the last year for the mega big block 455 engine.  The 455 was no longer referred to as the HO and remained essentially unchanged from 1975.  The big news for the Formula was the W50 Formula Appearance Package.  This package featured blacked out lower body trim and hood scoops with brightly colored striping.  Originally it was available only on Goldenrod Yellow cars but because of its popularity Carousel Red, Cameo White, and Sterling Silver colors were soon added with the tratment.  Both the standard and custom interiors were redesigned for 1976.

"The door seems to open eagerly.  The seat wraps around you.  You insert the key, light the engine, and put it into gear.  There are four ways to take off in a new 1976 Pontiac Firebird.  Because there are four versions of Pontiac's sports machine.  They all share the same basic great styling.  They all share the same basic interior.  Contoured buckets, easy-to-reach controls and a cockpit-like instrument panel.  They all share Pontiac's own Radial Tuned Suspension with Steel belted radials."
